
Heather Russell, Ph.D.
Psychologist
Heather F. Russell, PhD is a licensed psychologist with a Doctoral degree from Temple University in Counseling Psychology; a Master’s degree from La Salle University in Human Servies Psychology; and a Bachelor’s degree from Smith College in Biochemistry. She completed a pre-doctoral internship at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia both with specialization in ADHD and treating youth with medical needs.
Dr. Russell’s areas of treatment expertise include ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, physical pain, and coping with disability/medical diagnoses. For over 25 years she has been treating young children, grade schoolers, and adolescents as well as parents seeking guidance in helping their children.
When working with children and their families, she utilizes elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, parent-child interaction therapy, family systems therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and others in order to create an individualized approach. She provides individual and family counseling, parent consultation, consultation with other professionals and school-based consultation.
Dr. Russell has served as the sole Psychologist at Shriners Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, an orthopedic facility for youth from birth to 18 years old, for almost 25 years. While at Shriners, she has had the pleasure of gaining extensive experience in providing support for a diverse and often complex population of young children, adolescents, young adults and families. She has trained psychology students, has published research on the psychological impact of injuries on youth, and has created new assessment measures. This research has been presented by Dr. Russell to both national and international audiences. She is also the founder of the Ethics Committee at Shriners and served as Chair for over 10 years.
